8 Naturopathic Medicine Healing Basics
As a Naturopathic Doctor, we are trained in a multitude of healing modalities such as IV therapy, minor surgery, pharmaceuticals, nutrition, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, and botanical medicine, where it’s more tools in our toolbox to not just care for the patient, but to get to the root cause of disease.
The ‘root cause’ means that instead of just looking to make a symptom better (i.e. headaches, hot flashes, or a ‘boost of energy’), we have comprehensive knowledge about physiology and how our body works to talk about how actually multiple organ systems and other pathways may be affected. This is commonly why a supplement, medication, program, ‘one size fits all approach’ may not give you the relief you feel you truly need.
As supplements are meant to ‘supplement’ what you’re doing, your mindset (after all, my background is psychology so I’m very big on how we speak to ourselves, motivation, and the ‘what else’ are we looking at), and general foundation on the day to day is what aids in so many of these therapies being effective. Check them out below:
SWEATING: By sweating, the body can eliminate toxins through the skin, improve circulation, and boost the immune system. Naturopathic practices often include methods like saunas, exercise, and certain dietary approaches to encourage sweating and enhance overall health.
GROUNDING: This practice can help reduce inflammation, improve sleep, enhance mood, and support overall well-being by restoring the body’s natural electrical state. Grounding helps balance the body’s energy and can be an effective way to reduce stress and improve physical and mental health.
HYDRATION: Drinking enough water is crucial for every bodily function, from digestion to temperature regulation. Proper hydration aids in detoxification, improves skin health, and boosts energy levels. Aim to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water.
A DIET THAT WORKS FOR YOU: I don’t subscribe to any particular diet, though believe many can be tailored towards you and that you too can listen to your body and know your preferences! There is no one-size-fits-all approach; focus on whole, unprocessed foods, and listen to your body’s needs.
HERBS: Incorporate herbs like turmeric, ginger, and ashwagandha into your daily routine to support various aspects of health, from reducing inflammation to managing stress. Herbal teas and supplements can be easy easy to include these in your diet.
SLEEP BEFORE 10:30PM: Prioritize getting to bed early to align with your body’s natural circadian rhythm. Quality sleep before 11pm is particularly restorative, helping to balance hormones, improve mood, and support overall health.
LAUGH DAILY: Laughter is a powerful medicine. It reduces stress, boosts the immune system, an enhances mental health. Make time for activities that bring joy and laughter into your life every day.
CONNECTION: Foster meaningful connections with others. Social interactions are vital for emotional health, providing support, reducing stress, and enhancing overall well-being. Engage in activities that build and maintain strong relationships.
