Healthy-ish Over the Holidays
In the midst of holiday season, or even if you’re about to go on vacation, have you ever felt that it either needs to be all or nothing when it comes to what you eat, or even a bit of the mindset “I’ll start over in the New Year”? While it’s quite common, and especially in large groups of people where research has shown we may subconsciously eat more than usual, there are also ways to remain healthy - or ‘healthy-ish’ over the holidays.
I would describe ‘healthy-ish’ as where you generally eat the same way you would other times of the year, but maybe there are other foods and drinks that seem more tempting, or even come with that emotional memory.
On the flip side, perhaps neither option appeals to you, and you intend to eat/drink/exercise/sleep as you normal would. That’s great too! Point is, while the holidays (and vacation) can certainly offer more options to deviate from your usual routine, they can also provide valuable insight.
Here are some ways to still take care of yourself while enjoying yourself over the holidays:
1) Looking for other foods? Maybe that lifestyle change you’re on doesn’t seem to be fitting quite well and you’d rather try something else. This could be a good time to do some research into other diets, recipes, etc.
2) Keep up with your supplements. Pills and chewables are pretty easy to take with you, and some things like fish oil, for example, don’t need to be refrigerated if in pill form (though it can be). It’s certainly not a replacement for going too far off your routine, but they may help mitigate your concerns.
3) Take time to reflect. Ironically there are cases where we seem to feel more run down over vacation, and that could be because our body, mind, and spirit needs time to reflect on where we are, and visualize what we would like for ourselves moving forward. When it comes to health, same thing- good to take inventory on what you’re up to, and what would an more expansive direction/ plan look like.
Supplements, cleanses, and other natural treatments can work, though there may be many different issues!
